This performance was part of the All the Rage II series, showcasing women in performance art. The title comes from a phrase that San Francisco theater artist and activist Rhodessa Jones heard growing up: “Sit your big butt down. Don’t be so hardheaded.” This humanizing work follows the story of 4 inmates in prison–Regina Brown, a prostitute who was murdered after her second release from jail in two years; Mama Pearl, an old-timer who has seen it all too many times; Lena, a high school valedictorian kicking her drug habit in a jail cell; and Doris, a 16-year-old who sucks her thumb and calls for her mother.
In this monologue, Regina asserts her independence and control over her own life, emphasizing her strength and resilience. She candidly discusses her career as a prostitute and her outlook on relationships, rejecting the idea of being owned or controlled by any man or woman.
