RADA Audition Guide
The Royal Academy of Dramatic Art — one of the most prestigious drama schools in the world. Extremely competitive with a multi-round audition process.
Official requirements
RADA requires two contrasting speeches for the first round: one classical (Shakespeare or equivalent period) and one modern (post-1960). Each speech should be approximately two minutes long. You may be stopped after one minute. For recalls, you will be asked to work on your speeches with a panel member and may be given a sight-reading exercise. Third-round recalls involve a full day of workshops including movement, voice, and improvisation.
What panels look for
The panel responds well to actors who demonstrate genuine emotional connection over technical polish. They are tired of seeing overly rehearsed, "performed" audition pieces — they want to see you think and feel in the moment. Vulnerability and specificity of thought are valued over volume and projection. They appreciate when actors make bold, personal choices rather than safe, conventional ones.
