Nick is caught snooping through patient files by the manipulative Squeers while investigating the mistreatment of Mrs. Smike. Squeers attempts to intimidate and then recruit Nick by suggesting he is the heir to his uncle's business interests, dangling a potential inheritance to ensure his silence and cooperation.
Nick approaches his estranged, wealthy uncle Ralph to ask for a loan to support his mother and sister after his father's death. Ralph coldly rejects the plea, revealing deep-seated resentment over family inheritance and challenging Nick's sense of entitlement. The scene culminates in a heated clash of values between Ralph's ruthless self-reliance and Nick's desperate familial loyalty.
Frannie attempts to seduce the naive Nick while her father is asleep, using snacks and flirtation to win him over. Nick skillfully redirects the conversation to investigate the mistreatment of Mrs. Smike, eventually using a 'chaste peck' to pacify Frannie and escape the uncomfortable situation.
Maddy returns home to find her ailing father awake and worried about their financial situation. Despite his protests, she decides to proceed with an illegal arranged marriage to secure their future and pay for his medical care.
