Search to suit your audition brief
Start with the source and time limit your audition asks for. A film monologue can be useful for screen practice, but it will not meet a requirement for a published play. Check the full brief before committing to a piece.
What makes a monologue worth shortlisting?
Look for a specific listener and something the speaker needs from them. A useful excerpt gives you opportunities to change approach: persuade, reassure, challenge, retreat. Compare what you can play in each piece, as well as its subject or emotional intensity.
Playing ages and durations are guidance. Read the surrounding work where possible and time your own performance. Leave room for pauses and reactions within the audition’s limit.
Need help narrowing the choice?
Monologue Match lets you work from a more detailed brief. For school applications, start with the current requirements and use our RADA, LAMDA or Guildhall preparation guides.
Is the monologue database free?
Searching and reading opening previews are free. A free account lets you save favorites and build a shortlist. Pro adds full scene text, formatted PDFs, Director’s Notes and practice tools. Open any result to see the available options before upgrading.
