Why your headshot matters
Your headshot is the single most important marketing tool you have as an actor. It is the first thing a casting director sees, and it decides — in under a second — whether you get seen for a role. A great headshot does not just look good; it tells casting exactly who you are and what you are right for. Our free headshot analyser shows you how your shot reads to the industry, names your casting type, and gives you honest, specific feedback so you walk into every audition with the strongest possible first impression.
What casting directors look for
Eye contact and connection
A strong headshot holds the viewer with the eyes. Casting directors scan hundreds of shots — yours has to make eye contact that feels present and alive, not posed.
An authentic, castable expression
The best headshots read as a real, specific person, not a blank model. Your natural expression signals the roles you are believable in — warm, intense, comedic, grounded.
Clean, current presentation
Lighting, framing, styling, and retouching should look professional and recent. Outdated or over-retouched shots cost you auditions before a word is spoken.
A clear casting type
You want a casting director to instantly understand where you fit. The analyser names your type the way the industry does, so you can target the right roles and scenes.

Example headshot feedback
An illustrative example of the casting profile you get back. Your own result is written for your photo and the market you choose.
Playing age: 28–35
Casting types: Grounded professional · Warm best friend · Detective / authority
Energy: Calm, approachable, quietly confident
Strength: Sharp focus on the eyes and soft, even light — the shot reads as current and professional.
To improve: The expression is slightly guarded. A warmer second look would open up more commercial casting.
Plus quality, versatility and market-readiness scores and 5 matched audition scenes.

Frequently asked questions
Is the headshot analyser free?
Yes. Every free account includes 2 full analyses: your casting profile, quality scores and matched scenes at no cost. A Pro subscription adds unlimited analyses, PDF export, profile saving and more.
Do I need to sign up to use it?
You need a free account to run an analysis, so we can count your free analyses and email your results to you. Signing up takes seconds and no credit card is required. Anyone can read about the tool first; you only register when you are ready to analyse your headshot.
How does the AI headshot analyser work?
You upload a photo and choose the market you audition in. An AI vision model then reviews it the way an experienced casting consultant would: expression, eye connection, lighting, framing, background, wardrobe and market fit. It estimates your playing age, names your casting types, lists genuine strengths and specific improvements, and only flags problems it can actually see.
Is my photo stored?
Your headshot is uploaded only so it can be analysed, and the app asks for the upload to be deleted as soon as the analysis finishes. The text results are kept in your browser tab so you can come back to them, and are discarded once they are more than 24 hours old. Nothing is added to your Actor Profile or shared unless you choose to save or share it. Results are emailed to you unless you untick that option.
What makes a good acting headshot?
It looks like you do today, with sharp focus on the eyes, a natural expression that suits the roles you are right for, soft and flattering light, a clean or softly blurred background and simple clothing that does not pull focus. Head-and-shoulders framing is standard, and cropping a little off the top of the head is normal.
What is the difference between a theatrical and a commercial headshot?
A theatrical headshot (for film, TV drama and stage) is usually more grounded and serious, showing depth and the kind of characters you play. A commercial headshot is brighter and more open, often smiling and approachable, for adverts and lighter work. The analyser lets you judge your photo against Theatre or Commercial standards as well as the UK, US and Australian markets.
How often should actors update their headshots?
Whenever your headshot stops looking like you: a new haircut or colour, a change in weight, a beard grown or shaved, or simply getting older. Most actors update every one to two years, and children and teenagers more often because they change quickly. Casting directors want the person who walks in to match the photo.
What should I wear for headshots?
Plain, solid colours that suit your skin tone and casting type, with simple necklines and no logos, slogans or busy patterns. Choose clothes you would wear to an audition for the roles you want, and bring a couple of options so you can change the look between setups. The analyser points out wardrobe that distracts from your face.
Should my headshot be in colour or black and white?
Colour. Colour headshots are the standard in the UK and US because casting directors want to see your natural colouring, hair and eyes as they really are. Black and white headshots are now rarely asked for.
What is a casting type?
Your casting type is the category of roles you are most believable in — for example "warm everyman", "grounded authority figure", or "quirky best friend". Knowing your type helps you choose the right audition material, target the right roles, and brief your agent and photographer.
How accurate is the analysis?
The analyser is built to mirror real casting judgement and gives consistent, honest feedback rather than flattery. It is a powerful guide for self-assessment and choosing material, but it complements — not replaces — the judgement of your agent, casting directors, and a professional headshot photographer.
Which markets does it support?
You can analyse against UK (Spotlight), US (LA casting), Australia, Theatre, and Commercial standards. Each market has different headshot conventions, so choosing the right one tailors your casting profile and feedback to where you actually audition.
Will it suggest audition scenes for me?
Yes. Based on your casting profile it matches you to scenes from our library of 6,000+ audition monologues, duologues, and scenes — each with a match score and a short explanation of why the role suits you.
