FBI trainee Clarice Starling visits the incarcerated cannibalistic psychiatrist Dr. Hannibal Lecter to seek his help on a psychological profile. Lecter subjects her to a brutal psychological dissection of her background before offering a cryptic lead on the Buffalo Bill case.

FBI trainee Clarice Starling meets Dr. Frederick Chilton, the smarmy director of the Baltimore State Hospital for the Criminally Insane. He makes inappropriate advances and then escorts her through the asylum, giving her strict instructions on how to interact with Hannibal Lecter, while also making demeaning comments about her. Clarice maintains her professionalism despite his behavior.

FBI trainee Clarice Starling is pulled from her studies by Agent Jack Crawford, who assigns her to interview a dangerous and uncooperative serial killer. Clarice is initially eager for the opportunity but becomes unnerved when she learns the identity of her subject: Dr. Hannibal Lecter.
