Calder Willingham

Dax attempts to reason with Mireau about the impossible odds and the certain death of his men, leading to a tense confrontation about duty, patriotism, and the value of human lives in wartime.

General Broulard attempts to persuade Colonel Dax to lead his division in a seemingly impossible attack on a German stronghold known as the 'Ant Hill'. Broulard uses a combination of flattery, veiled threats, and the promise of a promotion to manipulate Dax into accepting the suicidal mission, while Dax grapples with his responsibility to his men.
