Whiplash
by Damien Chazelle
In a high-stakes late-night rehearsal, Fletcher pushes three drummers to their physical and mental breaking points in a brutal competition for the core spot. Andrew endures extreme physical pain and verbal abuse, eventually proving his worth through sheer endurance and defiance. The scene culminates in Fletcher finally acknowledging Andrew's skill after a display of near-manic determination.
Andrew coldly breaks up with Nicole, explaining that his obsession with becoming a world-class drummer will inevitably lead him to neglect and eventually resent her. Nicole forces him to confront his arrogance, leading to a sharp, clinical end to their relationship as Andrew chooses his ambition over human connection.
Fletcher and Andrew reconnect at a jazz club after Fletcher's dismissal from Shaffer Conservatory. Fletcher defends his abusive teaching methods, arguing that true greatness is only achieved through extreme pressure and that the phrase 'good job' is the most harmful in the English language.
