Choosing a film monologue
Choose a playable situation
A memorable movie speech is not automatically the right audition piece. Look for a moment in which the character needs a response: forgiveness, permission, agreement or a change of mind. A passage with a specific listener gives you something to do throughout the speech, even when you perform alone.
Check what the excerpt needs from the film
Read the scene description and preview together. Can a listener follow the immediate problem without seeing the preceding sequence? If the moment depends on editing, a large crowd or a visual reveal, decide how much of its effect survives as a solo performance. Keep the character’s argument and changes of thought intact when cuts are permitted.
Make the performance your own
Use the original performance to understand the situation, then try the piece without reproducing its delivery. Place the listener somewhere specific and pursue a different response from them. Try one run in which you expect agreement and another in which you expect resistance. Notice which choices make the next thought necessary.
Build a useful film shortlist
Keep options that differ in relationship, tone and energy, rather than several versions of the same emotional climax. Time your own delivery, including pauses. Check the audition brief before choosing film material: a request for a published stage play is a different requirement.
