The Paradox of the Slasher
from Behind the Mask: The Life of a Slasher Film Psycho-Killer
Written by David J Stiewe
Leslie Vernon explains the meticulous preparation and psychological philosophy behind his work as a slasher villain while applying makeup. He discusses the 'paradox' of his relationship with his 'survivor girl' and the destiny he believes he is fulfilling.
DOCUMENTARIAN: Why the make-up?
LESLIE: Makes me look a little more inhuman, a little more surreal. The mask only covers the face, and a lot of times it gets bumped, ripped off, whatever. You want to stay presentable no matter what. Your hands, your neck, it all has to stay consistent across the board. And there's chemical and medicinal components to some of this stuff, too.
DOCUMENTARIAN: Such as?
LESLIE: This stuff here, it's sort of like a Preparation H formula, which constricts the blood vessels near the surface of the skin. It slows down the bleeding from any lacerations, keeps your eyes from puffing up if you get hit.
