The Fight for Breath
Characters: Soldier
A weary soldier sits amidst the horrific remains of a village massacre, tending to a dying, badly burned child. He offers the boy water and a desperate, whispered plea to keep fighting for life despite the overwhelming agony and destruction surrounding them.
The Price of Survival
Characters: Fitzgerald, Bridger
Fitzgerald attempts to justify the abandonment of Glass and the murder of Hawk to a guilt-ridden Bridger. As they struggle to survive in the wilderness, Fitzgerald uses intimidation and cold logic to ensure Bridger's silence regarding their actions.
The Confrontation at the Fort
Characters: Henry, Bridger, Anderson
Captain Henry discovers that Hugh Glass is alive after being told he was dead, leading to a violent confrontation with Bridger. Henry interrogates the terrified young man at gunpoint to discover the whereabouts of Fitzgerald, who abandoned Glass and stole the company's money. The scene culminates in Henry charging Bridger with treason and ordering his imprisonment.
