    CATHERINE

I think how it is maybe I have never been able to have empathy or, if I felt it, to show it to anyone and this is why I have gone from woman to woman nothing has ever worked out for me and I have blamed the women I have been with thinking always I loved them but they didn't love me back but perhaps all this time they thought I didn't love them…

    About This Scene

In this poignant contemporary monologue from Charles L. Mee's play Fetes De La Nuit, a woman named Catherine confronts a devastating truth about her personal history. As she reflects on a pattern of broken romances, she strips away her long-held assumptions about her own behavior. What begins as a quiet meditation on failed relationships evolves into a raw, vulnerable awakening about her inability to express genuine empathy.

    Character Analysis

Catherine is an introspective woman who has spent years misinterpreting her emotional landscape. Having believed she was an expressive and caring partner, she now experiences the agonizing shock of realizing she projected detachment and cold indifference instead. Her character carries a heavy weight of regret and loneliness, yet her willingness to look directly at her faults reveals a profound desire for authentic self-discovery.

    Why This Works for Auditions

Clocking in at roughly two minutes, this piece provides an exceptional showcase for an actor who excels at internal processing and nuanced emotional shifts. Rather than relying on explosive confrontations or theatrical melodrama, the dramatic tension stems from real-time realizations that unfold thought by thought. Audition panels and casting directors see a performer capable of handling complex subtext with stillness, restraint, and mature vulnerability.

    Best Suited For

This monologue is ideally tailored for female actors in their mid-thirties to mid-forties seeking contemporary dramatic material that highlights maturity and quiet intensity. It serves performers pursuing Leading Lady, Sophisticated, or Vulnerable casting types who want to display deep emotional availability. Because of its intimate and conversational rhythm, it functions brilliantly for self-tapes, agent showcases, drama school auditions, and advanced practice.

    Performance Tips

Resist the temptation to play the conclusion from the very beginning; let the realization of your emotional distance land on you organically as you speak. Pay close attention to the playwright's deliberate line breaks, treating them as genuine shifts in thought and breath rather than mechanical pauses. Avoid sinking into passive self-pity by keeping your objective active, treating the monologue as an urgent, honest investigation into why your relationships fell apart.
